*Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s Best Actor Academy Award nomination may have marked a professional high point for the “12 Years a Slave” entertainer, but there is someone else who was just as happy.
Ejiofor’s sister, CNN correspondent Zain Asher, was emotional on-the-air while sharing the news of her brother’s Oscar nomination on Thursday.
“Everyone is so excited, so emotional, so overwhelmed at this because we have been waiting for this for a long time,” Asher told Brooke Baldwin as she relayed how “unbelievable” it was for her mother — who grew up without running water in Nigeria — to see her son nominated for an Oscar.
Despite the joy she felt, Asher was also emotional over the fact that her father isn’t around to see what his son accomplished.
“It is a kind of sad day as well because my father isn’t alive anymore, so he can’t see this,” Asher said, choking up. “When Chiwetel was twelve years old, he was in a car accident with my father and everybody in the car died apart from Chiwetel,” Asher said. “So he has that chance he was given… he really has gone on to make the most of it.”
