An off-duty Dallas police officer shot a suspect outside a South Oak Cliff school Thursday night.
Dallas Police Deputy Chief Gil Garza said in a news conference the officer was in civilian clothing and headed to a family function when he saw an altercation. A woman was stopped at an intersection when another car, driven by the suspect, pulled up alongside her. Words were exchanged between the two, then the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots into the victim's vehicle.

The officer witnessed the shooting, got out of his vehicle, and intervened before he shot the suspect.
The suspect and victim in the first shooting were taken to Dallas hospitals in critical condition. Garza said they were both expected to live.
The shootings occurred outside of Harry Stone Montessori on "meet the teacher" night. The main entrances to the school were locked down for a period.
"The word kind of spread through the school that there was some kind of shooting outside, and then they made an announcement over the PA system to all the teachers in the classrooms that there was a lockdown," said parent Michael Evans.
