A record new TV deal for the NBA may be good for the league and team owners — so long as they’re willing to pay their players more. In interviews since the deal was signed, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and more have seemed to hint that they expect to have the lid on max contracts lifted with the new cash boon coming in 2016.
Durant, for example, according to The Oklahoman’s Anthony Slater said that guys earning max contracts “are worth more than what they’re making.”
James said on Monday that with the new deal there was “no way” owners could argue financial hardship in the next round of CBA negotiations.
From USA TODAY Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt:
You always want more and give less. But I think both sides benefited from it as you’ve seen in this new TV deal. Both sides continue to grow, but there’s some things we’d like to see changed, as players.
On Tuesday, Kobe Bryant, who has said similar things before and likely won’t be playing by the time the new TV contract begins, seemed the angriest about the new money coming in and the position some players had been put in to take less money to build a winning team due to current salary caps.
