While Texas was wildly celebrating its last-second win off a put-back from an airball, the Arizona State bench was temporary motionless, with most reserves sprawled out on the court, one laying down on the row of empty chairs and another with his head buried in his hands. It was the perfect summation of the agony of defeat.
Those NCAA tournament highlight packages we see every year properly showcase the thrill of victory. We see Duke celebrating Christian Laettner’s buzzer beater, not Kentucky’s reaction to the gut-punch defeat. It’s sobering to remember there’s a darker side to March Madness.
