The British young royals, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are on their way, arriving in New York this evening for a 48-hour visit stretched over three days and including a trip to Washington by Will to meet President Obama at the White House.
But it's not often anyone, even POTUS, gets to hobnob with Bey and Jay.So the real focus of the mob of media cameras on Will and Kate will be Monday night at an NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets, part-owned by Beyoncé and Jay Z, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, including "King" James. At the media briefing by the British on Sunday morning in New York, reporters pelted briefers with questions. Will they meet Beyoncé and Jay Z? Will they? Will they?
Nick Loughran, the Cambridge press spokesman accompanying them, was his usual polite-but-not-expansive self.
"I don't know, but who knows what will happen when they go courtside," he told reporters.
Wait, they're going courtside? Even though she's five months pregnant? Apparently so, at least for the second half of the game, reporters were told.
As for Mr and Mrs Carter, asking their people for a comment is almost as futile as asking the palace for an on-the-record quote. That's the way it is with royals.
Why, exactly, are Will and Kate going to an NBA game anyway? Not like it's a major sport in the U.K.
It's because the NBA has joined their wildlife conservation/ban on illegal wildlife trade campaign, called Whose Side Are You On?. It aims to harness the power of sport and social media to raise awareness of wildlife crimes, a major theme of the Cambridges' charity-oriented trip.
