In case you missed it, Friday was Bill Murray Day at the Toronto Film Festival (whether he liked it or not). This meant free screenings of Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day and Stripes, fans dressed in costume and Murray deciding to take the day to do what sounded fun, scheduled interviews with press be damned. Enjoy our timeline of everything you missed on the day that celebrated the beloved actor who does pretty much whatever he damn well pleases.

9:45 A.M.

Bill Murray Day begins with a note from St. Vincent publicists apologizing.

These fans give Bill Murray Day their all while waiting in line for Ghostbusters.
They were pretty reasonable about the odds of Murray attending the screening. “It’s always a 50-50 chance when it comes to Mr. Murray,” said Canadian fan Adriana Munoz, 36. Words to live by.

Later, at a Q&A with Bill Murray moderated by Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, Murray clarifies his views on what his day should entail.

A crashing thunderstorm breaks over Toronto. Bill Murray, the People’s Actor, walks the entire press line drenched, while wearing a crown and a sash reading ‘Happy Bill Murray Day.’

11:11 P.M.

The entire audience stands up in a standing ovation to salute Bill Murray as St. Vincent credits roll.

11: 18 P.M.

“Why Bill for this role? Why did it have to be Bill?” asks Q&A moderator Cameron Bailey, artistic director of the Toronto Film Festival on the stage. “Because he couldn’t get Jack Nicholson,” retorts Murray, to great laughter. “It’s well documented.” (True, as Nicholson originally dropped out and Murray replaced him.)

“I would just like to say something,” states Murray while on stage. Then he paused. “What would you like me to say? Where are we?”
The sky rains tears of sadness as Bill Murray Day ends and ticket holders exit the Princess of Wales theater. Everyone is quickly drenched trying to navigate their way to the after-party.

MIDNIGHT

The Oscar buzz for Murray begins.
Those who prevailed in the downpour are rewarded with dancing. Lots and lots of Bill Murray, dancing.

Bill Murray is still dancing. Sometimes with Kristen Wiig. Sometimes with Melissa McCarthy. Sometimes with the wait staff. It is all glorious.
