Paul Revere, leader of '60s rock group Paul Revere and the Raiders , died Saturday at age 76, according to the band's official website.
The organist (born Paul Revere Dick) died at his Garden Valley, Idaho, home overlooking a river canyon, the Idaho Statesman reports. He had battled cancer.
The band, whose members sported three-cornered hats and American Revolution-inspired costumes, got its start in Boise, and released first album Like, Long Hair in 1961. They became best known for late '60s hits such as Kicks and Hungry, which peaked at No. 4 and 6 on Billboard's Hot 100, respectively, as well as Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian ), which hit No. 1 in July 1971.
In July, Revere took to the band's Facebook page to write that he although he had health issues, "nothing can stop the old man. I'm like the Energizer Bunny!" He went on to say that he wouldn't be touring with the band, "but the truth is, The Raiders kick major butt with or without me."
"High energy and fun is what a Paul Revere and The Raiders show is all about, and that's always the same, no matter which one of us shows up in a body cast."
